Vasectomy is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in Australia. It is a safe and effective form of long-term contraception.
Vasectomy is performed under general or local anaesthesia and the vas deferens (the tube that transports the sperm) is divided on both sides of the scrotum through two small incisions in the skin. The skin is closed with dissolvable sutures which do not require removal. It is performed as a day procedure and generally the recovery is short.
The risks of vasectomy are overall very low. Pain, swelling and discomfort after the procedure usually settles quickly. Long-term pain is uncommon (around 1-3%) and the risk of an unsuccessful procedure (i.e. remaining fertile) is very low.
Following vasectomy, you will not be considered sterile until a semen analysis is performed at the 3-month mark. During this time, you need to use alternative forms of contraception. At the 3-month mark, if there are no viable sperm on your semen analysis your doctor at Sydney Urology Group will give you clearance.
