Robotic Cancer Surgery

Surgical robotic platforms are increasingly being utilised to perform urological operations for both benign and malignant conditions.

Our approach to Robotic Cancer Surgery

The urologists at Sydney Urology Group undertook prestigious international fellowships in robotic surgery and are leaders in minimally invasive surgery in Sydney. Dr Nicholas Mehan completed a 2-year fellowship at Guy’s Hospital in London and Dr Scott Leslie completed a 2-year fellowship at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, led by Professor Inderbir Gill.

Dr Mehan and Dr Leslie perform robotic surgery to achieve the best possible outcomes for their patients. Robotic surgery has demonstrated advantages over conventional techniques including less pain and blood loss, smaller incisions with shorter hospital stay and quicker return to work and normal activities.

At Sydney Urology Group robotic surgery is performed routinely for urological cancers including prostate cancer, kidney cancer and bladder cancer. The robot is increasingly utilised for benign indications and urinary tract reconstruction. Our surgeons also perform robotic surgery for patients requiring reconstruction including pyeloplasty, ureteric reimplantation, psoas hitch, boari flap, and ileal conduits.

Our experience with Robotic Cancer Surgery

The surgeons at Sydney Urology Group have developed innovative robotic techniques to improve the oncological and functional outcomes of patients undergoing robotic surgery.

Since 2017 the surgeons at Sydney Urology Group have been an integral part of the Surgical Robotics and Innovation Summit. This is the largest multispecialty robotic surgery meeting in the Southern Hemisphere, co-convened by the Sydney Urology Group and attracting international leaders in robotic surgery to Sydney.

With appointments in both public and private hospitals, the surgeons at Sydney Urology Group are able to offer robotic surgery for all of their patients. With access to the dual console da Vinci Xi 4th generation robot, the surgeons are able to provide optimal teaching in robotic surgery for their fellows and registrars learning these advanced techniques.

Our approach to patient care

At Sydney Urology Group we provide a multidisciplinary, patient-centred model of care with our purpose to improve the quality of life for our patients and for the friends and families who are supporting them.
