Ureteric Reimplantation

Ureteric reimplantation is a surgical procedure designed to correct abnormalities or conditions affecting the ureters, the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder.

In adults, this procedure is often performed to address ureteric narrowing (strictures) or after tumour removal from the lower portion of the ureter. Uncommonly, reimplantation is required due to damage to the ureter during an unrelated operation.

Our approach to Ureteric Reimplantation

The type of repair depends on the location and severity of the narrowing or blockage.

During the procedure, your surgeon removes any diseased part of the ureter and “re-implants” the ureter, connecting it back to the bladder. A ureteric stent is placed to facilitate the healing process and is removed at 6 weeks with a further small procedure under local anaesthetic.

Ureteric reimplant can be performed with an open or robotic approach. The type of repair and approach is very dependent on each individual situation and will be discussed with you at your consultation.
