Bladder Neck Incision is a surgical procedure aimed at addressing urinary difficulties caused by a narrowed or obstructed bladder neck.
Bladder neck obstruction can result from various factors, such as scar tissue from previous surgery, enlarged prostate, or other anatomical issues. Patients often experience difficulty in initiating or completing urination, a weak urine stream, or frequent urinary tract infections.
The procedure is performed under general or spinal anaesthesia and involves the passage of a telescope into the bladder via the urethra.
The bladder neck is then ‘incised’ with either electrocautery or laser. A catheter is then placed which allows fluid to irrigate the bladder for 1-2 days following the procedure in hospital. The catheter is removed prior to your discharge from hospital.
As the tissues heal, urinary symptoms improve. In some men, the symptoms improve rapidly, but in others there can be irritation as the cavity heals which can last for several weeks.
In some patients, scarring can reoccur after surgery as part of the natural healing process. If this occurs and your symptoms return the procedure may need to be repeated.
