PSMA PET

If you have a new diagnosis of prostate cancer your doctor at Sydney Urology Group will most likely arrange a PSMA PET (Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen Positron Emission Tomography) scan.

PSMA PET scanning is an imaging test that uses a radioactive tracer to detect prostate cancer cells in the body. The PSMA molecule is found on the surface of prostate cancer cells, making it a highly specific and effective target for imaging. PSMA PET scans have revolutionised the way prostate cancer is diagnosed and managed. By providing detailed information about the location and extent of cancer, they contribute to more accurate staging and personalized treatment plans.

Our approach to PSMA PET

How Does PSMA PET Scan Work?

  1. Tracer Injection: A small amount of a radioactive substance (tracer) linked to PSMA is injected into the bloodstream.
  2. Uptake by Cancer Cells: The tracer is attracted to and taken up by prostate cancer cells that express PSMA.
  3. Imaging: A PET scan is then performed, capturing detailed images of the distribution and concentration of the tracer in the body.
  4. Analysis: Radiologists analyse the images to identify the presence, location, and extent of prostate cancer.

 Advantages of PSMA PET Scan

  1. High Sensitivity and Specificity: PSMA PET scans are highly sensitive and specific, allowing for the detection of small amounts of cancer cells.
  2. Accurate Staging: Helps determine the extent of the disease, aiding in more precise staging of prostate cancer.
  3. Identification of Recurrent Disease: Useful in detecting the recurrence of cancer after initial treatment.
  4. Personalized Treatment Planning: Provides valuable information to tailor treatment plans based on the location and aggressiveness of the cancer.

Our experience with PSMA PET

When is a PSMA PET Scan Recommended?

  1. Staging: To determine the stage of prostate cancer.
  2. Biochemical Recurrence: In cases of rising prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels after initial treatment for prostate cancer
  3. Treatment Planning: To guide the selection of appropriate therapies based on the location and extent of the cancer.

What to Expect During the PSMA PET Scan Procedure?

  1. Preparation: Fasting for a few hours before the scan may be required.
  2. Tracer Injection: The radioactive tracer is administered intravenously.
  3. Waiting Period: There may be a waiting period to allow the tracer to circulate and accumulate in the body.
  4. Scanning: You will lie on a scanning table, and images are obtained using a PET scanner.
  5. Duration: The entire process usually takes a few hours.
