Kidney stones or renal calculi are common and affect up to 1 in 10 Australians.
At Sydney Urology Group the treatment of urinary stones is individualised and depends on the size and position of the stone, pre-existing medical conditions and overall kidney function.
Ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and treat kidney stones. It involves the use of a thin, flexible ureteroscope equipped with a laser to break down or fragment stones in the urinary system. Ureteroscopy is ideal for treating kidney stones that are too large to pass naturally or are causing persistent symptoms such as pain, haematuria (blood in urine), and urinary tract infections.
The ureteroscope is guided through the ureter to the location of the kidney stone. The laser is used to fragment the kidney stone into smaller, more manageable pieces. The energy from the laser breaks down the stone without causing damage to surrounding tissues. The smaller stone fragments can be removed using a basket-like device or may pass naturally through the urinary tract.
Ureteroscopy is performed without the need for incisions, reducing trauma and promoting a quicker recovery. Laser lithotripsy allows for precise targeting of kidney stones, ensuring effective fragmentation and removal. Typically, a ureteric stent is placed at the completion of the procedure. Patients may experience some discomfort from the stent as well as frequent urination and mild haematuria. These symptoms are not dangerous but understandably can cause distress. Fortunately, stents are often only needed for very short periods of time and stent related symptoms resolve with its subsequent removal.
Ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy is a highly effective and minimally invasive approach for the treatment of kidney stones. The combination of advanced technology and precision allows for successful fragmentation of stones, leading to improved outcomes and a faster recovery for patients. Our doctors at Sydney Urology Group offer this procedure at a variety of hospitals around Sydney in both the public and private sector.
