Transperineal Prostate Biopsy

A transperineal prostate (TP) biopsy is performed to diagnose prostate cancer in men with a rising PSA or a suspicious digital rectal examination.

Before proceeding with biopsy the surgeons at Sydney Urology Group will arrange for MRI of the prostate and/or PSMA PET scan so that targeted biopsies can be taken of any lesions seen on imaging.

Our approach to Transperineal Prostate Biopsy

The surgeons at Sydney Urology Group perform transperineal prostate biopsies using two techniques:

  • Transperineal biopsy or “free-hand” biopsies – prostate biopsies are taken through skin of the perineum. This significantly reduces the risk of infection compared with traditional trans-rectal biopsies. Areas of abnormality on the MRI scan are targeted with ultrasound guidance.
  • Robotic targeted or “fusion” biopsies – the MRI images are fused or integrated with the live ultrasound images. A robotic arm then guides the placement of the biopsy needle to ensure the lesion on the MRI is accurately targeted. This technique is particularly useful for smaller lesions particularly in men who might be suitable for focal therapy.

The surgeons at Sydney Urology Group offer TP biopsy in both the public and private hospital systems.
