Prostate Cancer Screening

Screening for prostate cancer has been a controversial topic ever since the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) molecule was discovered in 1980.

Before we had the PSA test, men presented with prostate cancer at a late stage with symptoms including inability to pass urine, blood in the urine as well as bone pain, weight loss and fatigue, which are the harbingers of metastatic disease.

Our approach to Prostate Cancer Screening

The widespread use of PSA caused what is known as a “stage shift” – with men diagnosed with prostate cancer at an earlier stage whilst there is still the possibility for cure.

There is now strong evidence that screening patients for prostate cancer with PSA and digital rectal examination saves lives and is something we advocate at Sydney Urology Group.

Advances in imaging technology, biopsy techniques, PSA derivatives (velocity, free:total ratio, Prostate Health Index) have allowed us to better identify the clinically significant cancers, whilst avoiding over detection and overtreatment of the indolent, slow-growing tumours, that men will die with rather than from.

Our experience with Prostate Cancer Screening

At Sydney Urology Group we are dedicated to screening better and smarter. Dr Jeffery, Dr Mehan and Dr Leslie all offer counselling regarding the pros and cons of prostate cancer screening and are able to guide you through the initial PSA test as well as any subsequent investigations such as MRI of the prostate, PSMA PET scan or transperineal prostate biopsy.

For those men that are identified with clinically significant cancer, Sydney Urology Group offers the latest treatment options including robotic prostate surgery and focal therapy. Dr Mehan and Dr Leslie have developed novel techniques that allow preservation of erectile function and urinary function, to maximise quality of life after curative surgery and get their patients back to living life to the fullest.

Dr Jeffery specialises in prostate cancer survivorship which involves maximising the quality of life (QOL) for men diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer.
