Testicular Cancer

Testicular cancer is a rare type of cancer which is highly treatable, especially when detected early.

Our approach to Testicular Cancer

Risk factors for testicular cancer include:

  1. Age – Testicular cancer is more common in young and middle-aged men, typically between the ages of 15 and 44.
  2. Undescended testes – Men born with a testicle that did not descend into the scrotum are at an increased risk.
  3. Family History – having a close relative with a history of testicular cancer (i.e. brother or father) may elevate the risk.
  4. Personal History – individuals who have had testicular cancer in one testicle are at a slightly higher risk of developing it in the other.

Our experience with Testicular Cancer

It is crucial to be aware of potential symptoms and seek urgent medical attention if any of the following are noticed:

  1. Lump or swelling: Painless lumps or swelling in either testicle.
  2. Pain or discomfort: Persistent pain or discomfort in the testicles or scrotum.
  3. Changes in size or shape: Any noticeable changes in the size, shape, or consistency of the testicles.

If testicular cancer is suspected you will be assessed with a series of investigations including a physical examination, ultrasound imaging and blood tests. If these investigations suggest a testicular tumour the next step is removal of the involved testicle by a procedure called a radical inguinal orchidectomy. Depending on the extent of the tumour further treatment may be required including chemotherapy, radiation or more extensive surgery to remove the lymph glands in the abdomen (Retroperitoneal lymph node dissection – RPLND).
