For patients with large kidney stones, laser or shockwave therapy may be ineffective to successfully treat the stone.
In these circumstances, percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is the preferred method to manage patients with a large stone burden (>2cm or staghorn calculi).
PCNL involves placing a camera (nephroscope) directly into the kidney and using a lithoclast ultrasound probe to fragment and remove the stone.
At Sydney Urology Group we offer percutaneous nephrolithotomy for both public and private patients. Dr Scott Leslie performs PCNL at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and privately at St. George Private Hospital.
