Robotic prostate enucleation (simple prostatectomy) for benign prostatic hyperplasia
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition as men get older. In some cases, the prostate can be very large (> 150 mL) causing significant obstruction and bothersome symptoms.
This option is particularly suited for men who have a second pathology that requires surgical treatment such as a bladder diverticulum or bladder stone.
The robotic approach utilises small incisions in the abdomen to carefully remove the obstructive prostate tissue improving the flow of urine and relieving symptoms associated with BPH. The bladder and remaining prostate are repaired and a urinary catheter is placed to facilitate the healing process. The catheter typically remains for 1 week and is removed quickly and painlessly in the rooms. Compared with a traditional open enucleation the robotic approach allows for less blood loss, quicker return to usual function and a shorter hospital stay.
As a robotics fellow at the University of Southern California he published one of the early case series on this technique. (Link to pdf of paper)
Robotic Enucleation / Simple Prostatectomy is an advanced and effective surgical option for individuals with very enlarged prostates causing bothersome urinary symptoms. Dr Leslie offers this procedure for private patients at The Mater Hospital and Chris O’Brien Lifehouse
An alternative form of treatment for men with a very large prostate is Holmium laser enucleation (HoLEP).
