The adrenal glands are endocrine glands that produce a variety of hormones including adrenalin and the steroids, aldosterone and cortisol.
There is one on each side of the body and are found above the kidneys. These hormones play an important role in regulation of blood pressure and metabolism, and adrenalin is important for producing a rapid response throughout the body in stressful situations.
Lesions within the adrenal gland are quite common, and are typically identified incidentally from abdominal imaging performed for unrelated symptoms. Most of these lesions are benign (adenoma, myelolipoma, incidentaloma) and can be managed conservatively.
Some adrenal tumours need to be treated if there is a concern over a potentially cancerous lesion or a benign tumour that is over-producing hormones. In these situations the surgeons at Sydney Urology Group are able to remove these tumours with robotic or laparoscopic surgery. This allows for a minimally invasive approach, resulting in less post-operative pain, a shorter hospital stay and quicker return to normal activities.
At Sydney Urology Group we provide a multidisciplinary, patient-centred model of care with our purpose to improve the quality of life for our patients and for the friends and families who are supporting them.
