Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) is an advanced surgical technique used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — a common condition that causes urinary symptoms in men as they age.
By combining precision laser technology with a minimally invasive approach, HoLEP offers long-term symptom relief with fewer complications and a faster recovery than traditional surgical options.
HoLEP is performed entirely through the urethra, without the need for external incisions. This reduces surgical risks and promotes a more comfortable, quicker recovery.
Unlike procedures that only trim excess prostate tissue, HoLEP removes the entire obstructive portion, providing more thorough and lasting relief of symptoms.
HoLEP is highly effective for prostates of all sizes, including very large glands that may not be suitable for other surgical approaches.
The holmium laser both cuts and coagulates tissue, which helps minimise bleeding during the procedure and lowers the likelihood of needing a blood transfusion.
Most patients benefit from a shorter hospital stay, earlier catheter removal, and a quicker return to normal daily activities.
Dr Nicholas Mehan is a high-volume and experienced HoLEP surgeon, performing over 100 HoLEP procedures each year. He completed advanced fellowship training in HoLEP at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London, working alongside internationally renowned experts.
In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr Mehan plays a key role in training and mentoring future urologists. He leads surgical training at Nepean Hospital, one of the few centres in Australia offering high-volume HoLEP experience for surgical trainees. He also serves as a surgical proctor, providing hands-on training to consultant colleagues throughout Australia
